Amazon Echo Spot Review

Amazon Echo Spot Review

My husband walked in the house a couple weeks ago with the Echo Spot in hand and said, “Hey, I got you a present!” That is a rare occurrence except for the occasional Twix bar he brings me. Turns out he won it from a contest at work, but I’ll take it! I’ve wanted to get one of these and looked into it a while back as a Christmas gift but we both decided against it. Good thing we did because we got it for free.

The Echo Spot can tell you the weather, play music, make phone calls, set alarms and answer any question you may have among a million other things, all you have to do is ask Alexa. There is a digital display screen that you can customize to look however you want it to and you can also adjust the cards that appear on the face like calendar events or trending topics. In addition, you can adjust all the settings for nighttime use; dull the screen or put it in Do Not Disturb mode. If you have any smart technology in your home like a baby monitor, security system, smart thermostat or even smart bulbs you can control them all with the echo spot. It seriously can do everything!img_99702.jpg

You outer shell of the Echo Spot comes in either black or white. You can purchase stands for it and screen protectors. This retails for $130 on Amazon or you could opt for either of the 2 cheaper options; the Echo Dot or the Echo. I’ve pulled the comparison sheet straight from Amazon to show you guys.

Amazon surprised me with this one a little bit. The outer casing is blue and bright with all sorts of text and images on it. There is no confusion on what you are getting here. When you remove the outer casing you get a clean and simple matte black box with a nice high gloss Amazon smile right on top. I felt I needed to address the packaging because it feels high end and thought out, even for as simple as it is. I liked it so much that I still have the box. : )

So easy. Plug it in and follow the steps. In a minute or two after plugging it in the display will turn on and you simply choose your language, log into your Amazon account, download the app and you’re done.

Ask Alexa to go to settings or just tap the screen. The display is also a touch screen. You can change the clock faces to 1/14 stock options or choose your own photo, you can adjust the brightness and change the displays like calendar of events or the weather. When Alexa plays you a song it displays the lyrics so you can sing along to every word. It does not play every song though. Some are not available and you need to upgrade to Amazon music to be able to play them. IMG_9977IMG_9978

It’s nice to use Alexa when you are cooking. You can ask her recipes, to find alternatives to ingredients or set a timer. ‘She’ makes it so easy. The speaker on this is pretty good but could be louder. We keep this in our living room and with our open concept it makes it hard to hear well from the kitchen. There are volume buttons right on the top or you can ask Alexa to turn up or down the volume.
Alexa has skills. I mean that literally and figuratively. There are skills that you can turn on through the app. One that I love is the TrackR. It helps you find your phone. I am constantly losing my phone in my house because I set it down in the weirdest places. If you ask ‘Alexa, use TrackR to find my phone” you will get a phone call from Alexa so you can find it. The skills available are extensive. Find new movies, tell jokes, try new recipes, play games, do a workout, get updates on world news, control your car, request an Uber ride and control your smart home among many other things. You can even order a pizza, all from the comfort of your couch just by asking Alexa.

Overall, I love it. I play music all the time and don’t have to worry about plugging in my phone or pulling out my JBL speaker which has a crappy battery life. The echo spot stays plugged in and always works. There are new skills that come out frequently so the possibilities to what Alexa can do are endless.

What do you think about the Echo Spot? Do you have one? What are your favorite features? Both my husband and I are learning as we go and I’m sure there are many more features that we don’t even know about. Thank you all so much for reading. Until next time,
